The Zugspitze is served by 3 cable railways. The first, the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Railway in Ehrwald, was opened in 1926, the Eibsee cable railway in Grainau in 1963 and the Bavarian Glacier Railway in 1992. The base station of the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Railway lies in the west at the foot of the Wetterstein mountain, at 1,225 m. The cable railway spans an altitude of 1,725 m.
The Zugspitze is one of the landmark mountains in the Alps because of it's unparalled views. This is due to the fact that there are no peaks of a similar height in the immediate vicinity. Nothing obstructs the view across 4 countries from the peak which is superb on clear days! |
