At 2,962 m, the Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany. It is situated in the Wetterstein range, in the Northern Limestone Alps. The border between Austria (Tyrol) and Germany (Bavaria) runs between the western and the eastern peaks. The “gold” cross on the peak is the target of many mountain climbers and day-trippers. However, you have to be sure footed and have a head for heights in order to reach it.

Tiroler Zugspitzbahn At 2,962 m, the Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany. It is situated in the Wetterstein range, in the Northern Limestone Alps. The border between Austria (Tyrol) and Germany (Bavaria) runs between the western and the eastern peaks. The “gold” cross on the peak is the target of many mountain climbers and day-trippers. However, you have to be sure footed and have a head for heights in order to reach it.

The Zugspitze is served by 3 cable railways. The first, the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Railway in Ehrwald, was opened in 1926, the Eibsee cable railway in Grainau in 1963 and the Bavarian Glacier Railway in 1992. The base station of the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Railway lies in the west at the foot of the Wetterstein mountain, at 1,225 m. The cable railway spans an altitude of 1,725 m.

The Zugspitze is one of the landmark mountains in the Alps because of it's unparalled views. This is due to the fact that there are no peaks of a similar height in the immediate vicinity. Nothing obstructs the view across 4 countries from the peak which is superb on clear days!

Gipfelkreuz The prevailing rock type of the Zugspitze, or the Wetterstein mountain, is compact limestone, which was formed 210 million years ago and moved upward approximately 100 million years ago. The predominant rock on the Zugspitze has special characteristics and is therefore also known as Wetterstein lime.

The Schneeferner is the largest German glacier. However, this glacier has shrunk so greatly that it split into two parts long ago (Northern and Sourthern Schneeferner) and now hardly represents more than an field of ice.

Leutnant Naus The first ascent of the Zugspitze was on 27th August 1820 by Lieutenant Naus. Since then the peak has become the target for many mountaineers of all nationalities. In 1897 the Munich House with meteorological tower (1900) was erected as a hut for shelter by the Munich Section of the German Alpine Association.

Technik am Gipfel Through early development and its favorable location, technology, however, also soon found its way to the peak. Besides the above-mentioned cable railways, science and research have captured the Zugspitze. The German Weather Service, Max Planck Institute, Fraunhofer Institute, aerials and transmitters of various establishments, and Austrocontrol, to name but a few, make use of the extraordinary location.
